Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental
housing, typically for extremely low-income families, the elderly, and persons
with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered
single family houses to highrise apartments for elderly families. Today in the
United States, there are approximately 1.2 million households living in public
Prospective tenants can apply for these homes at our main office
at 1611 N. Robison Rd. Tuesdays from 9:00 am - 11:00 am, and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
Applicants are then placed on the waiting list for an apartment based on the
number of people in their family. Applicants can expect to be on the waiting
list for three (3) to eighteen (18) months.
Once an apartment becomes vacant, the Housing Authority will
interview the next person on the waiting list to determine eligibility for our
program. Eligibility is based on a number of items, including income, criminal
background, prior rental history, and debts owed to other public housing
agencies. If an applicant meets all the eligibility criteria, they are offered
the next available apartment as their new home.
The Housing Authority of the City of Texarkana, Texas has five
public housing properties that are home to over 330 families. We are proud of
our communities and our residents.
In addition, HATT is in the process of redeveloping our three
largest family properties and converting them into mixed-income properties that
include a mix of public housing units and low income tax credit units that will
house an additional 372 families in our community.
